These wine notes are not vintage specific but rather describe how we approach crafting each wine variety. As a boutique, hands-on producer, we adhere to minimal intervention where possible allowing the earth and the elements to be expressed in the final wine.

We work our own vineyards to produce the Huia label. We enjoy long standing relationships with committed growers to produce the Hunky Dory label.It takes a small group of very motivated, dedicated and passionate people to nurture our vineyards, help make our wine, manage the books, work with our global sales partners and look after the visitors to our cellar door. Over the years there have been new faces welcomed to the family as each harvest rolls by.
Claire and Mike Allan planted the first vines at Huia in 1994 and formally started Huia Vineyards in 1996. From then until now, the health of the earth and the happiness of the people at Huia have always been the most important factor.
It takes great land and great people to make great wine.
At Huia Vineyards we use no pesticides, insecticides or herbicides in our vineyards.
Within the wine making process we eliminate the use of artificial additives. This leaves the wine full of natural texture.
We minimize the amount of intervention throughout fermentation. Mainly, we use wild yeast ferments.
Biodynamic growing is integrated into our vineyard organic program. Animals graze on our vineyard blocks, and our diversity of wildflowers, trees and other plants keep our resident beehives busy. Our composting of winery and vineyard waste allows us to return all natural matter back to the vineyard.
The sustainability of the land and surrounding ecosystem are supported and respected. We are equipped to use natural methods in our vineyard management and wine making process.
Overall, everything is allowed to be “al naturel”. It is a lifestyle choice here at Huia, and we love it.
